Protect Your Hair :)
Its been quite a few days since my last post. School has started back again but, I'll try not to "keep you hanging" for that long. I know how you miss my posts lol. Today I am going to talk about protective styling. Protective styling is vital because it keeps your hair shielded from damage that day to day styling can cause. As you know combing, ironing, even too much brushing can cause damage. So you want to wear a protective style as often as possible to give your hair a rest and prevent breakage. Some great protective styles include cornrolls, buns, french twists, french braids, even a full head weave if you must have some hair flowing (the cornrolls underneath will protect your hair). Not everything works for everybody so it is important to know what is best for your hair. If you're obsessed with abusing you're hair, then start of with protective styling 1-2 days a week. You want to work up to wearing protective styles as much as you can, if you want long luxurious hair. Remember, find something that looks cute on you too and that is acceptable in your work place. Pictures really won't help so here are some links that will teach you how to make a couple protective styles. French Braid..French Twist

Stylists on The Come Up: Cosmetology Student Olympics
Tonight was very exciting I went to my first hair show and saw some very talented artists. It really was art what these young women and even a few young men created. The Metro Cosmetology Association holds a Student Olympics every year. Judging students on their work in fantasy hair styles, evening hair styles, and hair coloring. Each student has 45 minutes to complete their work. As much, as creativity was looked for in these hairstyles it was clear that execution(neatness) of the hairstyle was what made a winning style. Some of the creations that I saw were
This photo above of this finger wave style was my favorite. The stylist only received Honorable mention though. As you can see there was an abundance of talent in the room. My Cosmetology school that I attend racked up the most awards than any other school yay! We are home to many winners. Some of the winners included this style above, the heart shaped bun, and the tall blue and black tower. Shows like this are great because it helps the students gain confidence and exposure. I also got an insider scoop story from one of the girls. The stylist who created the heart shape bun had another style in mind actually with like a 3d heart on top of the head (it was cute she showed me a photo) but, because of how nasty girls can be when it comes to competition another girl stole the piece she needed to create her stlye leaving her to have to create a whole new hairstyle last minute. That to me is true talent at your craft when you are able to improvise last minute and still succeed (she placed 2nd). Jesus had her back! Who knows maybe she wouldn't have won if she did the other style. It goes to show though, cheaters never win and winners never cheat.
God Bless

Chop! Chop!
The other day I happened to be in a store and I took notice of something that bothered me. I saw another young woman with terrible split ends. I'm not talking about just minor splitting which causes uneven ends. I am speaking of tattered, see through, ends. Why is it that we love to hold onto ragged ends as if they are an actual legitimate display of length? I feel that, no matter how long your hair is, if it is split up to a third to a half of the length of your hair its pointless and its time for a BC (big chop). It's like we have now surpassed the trimming time and you need a cut. If you trim regularly you won't need a BC. I know at times our hair stylists can become a bit scissor happy so we don't trim because we're scared they might lose their minds but, it's necessary to trim your hair even if you have to learn to trim it yourself. I recommend you trim your hair as often as you relax it. If you don't relax your hair then I would say every 3 months or so. If you don't have a good pair of hair cutting scissors check these out. Contrast, size: 5.75 $69.00 www.luckyhareshears.com
Remember, if you are trying to grow your hair don't let your stylist convince you that you need to take off more than necessary just so she can achieve the style she wants to execute. Trim only the SPLIT ENDS. Here's a link to a video on hair trimming for your viewing pleasure, enjoy

Cleary Not Your Flintstone Vitamins
After seeing women with hair textures similar to mine have waist length hair I was curious to know their secrets, most of them were on hair vitamins. Hair supplements are now a growing trend among women to help increase hair growth. Biotin and MSM are two of the most widely used supplements women have been taking for years. I recently started taking biotin, it’s too soon to see growth results but in about another 3 months I will let you know. I have noticed an extreme change in my nails though, they grew a third of an inch longer and are very strong. Now, there are many mutli-vitamin hair supplements that not only give a blend of vitamins and minerals that will improve your hair but are also be beneficial to your skin and nails as well. Some also contain the daily amounts of other vitamins that are vital to your health such as Vitamin C, Calcium, Folic Acid, even B-12. Do remember if you decide to take any sort of supplement to help your hair, don’t look for immediate results. You won’t see anything after a week. Establish a daily amount to take as well as the time of the day you will take them. Also, research everything for yourself before you decide to anything into your body. Here are a couple to start off your research:
GNC’S Women’s Hair, Skin, and Nails Formula $18.99 www.gnc.com
Vitamin World’s Mega Vitamins for the Hair $13.99 www.vitaminworld.com
Nature’s Bounty Biotin 1000 mcg tablets $10.29 www.cvs.com

Hair Help 101
Hey Ladies,
Breakage is one of things that I hate them most. When I find little pieces of the ends of my hair on my pillow or my shirt I get very upset. It’s like saying bye-bye to your results from recent hair growth. I’ve just found a solution to help treat and prevent further breakage. Ladies, get out your aprons because you’re about to cook-up a concoction. It’s a Homemade Avocado Protein-Moisture Mask. All you need is an avocado, an egg, extra virgin olive oil, and water. Egg gives hair the protein needed for strength, and the avocado works as an emollient to moisturize dry hair. This combination is genius. Application is easy, pretty much the same as applying any other treatment. Wash hair, apply mask, leave-on for 30 minutes and then rinse. Not only does it leave the hair silky and strong it smells great too! Here is the direct link to the full instructions and exact recipe for you to stir-up. Enjoy!

Style Time
Have you been good to your hair lately? If you have it’s alright to take out the curling irons, flat irons, etc… for a day of styling. Yay! I’m not a fan of using heat appliances on the hair everyday due to the great damage they can do but, if you use them sparingly it’s fine. Today my hairstyle will be flip-curls. I LOVE FLIP CURLS. If you know me, you probably know that I used to wear my hair like this all the time like it was going out of style. I had to cut back on it though because applying frequent heat to your hair will only cause breakage, not only leaving you sad but, leaving your hair behind in your curling iron. It’s Saturday and I’ve been pretty good with neglecting my heat tools, so it’s time to get glam for the weekend and I am breaking out the flips. My tool of choice is my FHI Heat Platform Domed Styling Iron $195 www.fhiheat.com
The domed plates and rounded corners makes curls, flips, and spirals fast and easy. I divide my hair into 3 layers top, middle, and bottom and start curling each section rotating my wrists in an upward counterclockwise direction for the left half of my head, and an upward clockwise direction for the right half of my head. Voila! There you have it.

Moisture, Moisture, Moisture!
Welcome*
Its my first blog entry and today's topic is moisturizing. So while chatting it up with some friends I recently found out a large number of women do not moisturize their hair which shocks me because moisturizing is key to hair growth. It’s pretty simple if your hair is dry you need to moisturize it, if you don’t it will break off leaving you sad:(. It seems that today we have all became to busy to stop and give our hair a drink. We go to the Dominican salons and get our fresh blow outs (which dry out our hair) and forget to moisturize after. This is a shame. Let’s add this to the list of our New Years resolutions. It’s not too late its still January. If you need a new moisturizer, I personally recommend Jane Carter Nourish & Shine. Just rub a little into the palms of your hand and massage through hair and scalp. Oh yeah, and for you ladies who don’t moisturize in fear of looking like a grease-monkey this will give you beautiful shine without that heavy, oily, feeling. Give it a shot!
